STORIS ICEBREAKER WAGB-21
The Coast
Guard has acquired the first polar icebreaker in more
than 25 years. The ship will be renamed USCGC Storis,
which makes the system the second to bear the name. Her
hull measures 360 feet long. She can reach a maximum
speed of 15 knots in open water and 5 knots on ice.
The Coast
Guard cutter Storis is currently in a Tampa shipyard,
where she is being adapted for service use. Storis will
be homeported in Juneau, Alaska, where she is expected
to participate in icebreaking operations, maritime
patrols and other Coast Guard duties in the far North.
The initial commissioning crew of the CGC Storis will
consist of approximately 60 officers and enlisted
personnel.
The Coast Guard still needs eight to nine polar
icebreakers to meet its operational requirements. The
first of three planned heavy icebreakers, the Polar
Security class, is expected to start by the end of this
year. The Storis will serve as a stopgap, supporting the
service's other two oceangoing icebreakers, which are
both homeported in Seattle: the
Polar Star and the medium icebreaker
Healy.
We build this
primarily wood model of the Storis 21 in
three sizes: 21.5" long (1/200 scale), 30" long (1/144
scale), and 43" long (1/100 scale). Email us for prices
and lead time.
Our Coast Guard models are the very best in the
world and this one is no exception. We can also build an ice scenic
base for this model.
