EDWARD CARY Whaler

Edward Cary ship

The whaleship Edward Cary was a typical mid-19th century Nantucket whaler. She was a full-rigged ship of 353 tons, built in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts in 1841 by Gideon Barstow & Son. Mattapoisett was a shipbuilding center, launching 161 whaling vessels between 1771 and 1878, including 62 for Nantucket.

From 1841 to 1864, Edward Cary made six successful whaling voyages, hunting whales and circumnavigating the globe. She typically sailed with a captain, three mates, four boatsteerers, cooper, blacksmith, cook, steward, and 16 to 18 seamen.

In late 1864, the ship was sold in San Francisco. On her final voyage in 1865, the Edward Cary was captured and burned by the Confederate raider Shenandoah at Pohnpei Island in the western Pacific. There crew were left on the island, and most ultimately returned home.

"Many thanks for the great model of the Edward Cary. Please pass along my thanks to your team. The level of craftsmanship is very high. I have a few follow-up questions...
