SS
LURLINE model
SS Lurline was the last of
the four American-built Matson "White Fleet" liners
designed by William Francis Gibbs. She was christened on
12 July 1932 in Quincy, Massachusetts. On 12 January
1933, SS Lurline left New York City bound for San
Francisco via the Panama Canal on her maiden voyage,
thence to Sydney and the South Seas, returning to San
Francisco on 24 April 1933. She then served on the
express San Francisco to Honolulu service with her
sister "White Fleet" ship Malolo.
Lurline was legendary on the Hawaii run, offering
warm hospitality and pleasant diversions on five day
express crossings from San Francisco and Los Angeles to
Honolulu. The time spent onboard was as much a
part of a Hawaiian holiday.
She was the last of
four fast and luxurious ocean liners that Matson built
for the Hawaii and Australasia runs from the West Coast
of the United States.
SS Lurline was
launched on July 18 1932. She served as a
troopship in World War II. In 1963, the famous Lurline became Chandris Lines' RHMS Ellinis.

This primarily wood SS Lurline ocean
liner model features:
-
Plank-on-frame,
hollow hull
(very important). This construction method gives
accurate hulls, as artisans create the frame of the hull
exactly like in drawings. The solid hull method, on the
other hand, employs most guesswork on the degree of
curvature.
- Hollow superstructure is comprised of many
individual thin pieces of wood glued together, not
several solid pieces of wood stacking on top one
another.
- Windows and portholes are cutouts (not black decals),
uniform, and on straight lines. We are not shy
to show the model in large photos. Nothing to hide!
- Full set of lifeboats is
included. We left some out of the pictures so that you
can see the beautiful davits.
