USS ALBACORE SUBMARINE

USS Albacore is a unique submarine that pioneered the American version of the teardrop hull form of modern submarines. The revolutionary design was derived from extensive hydrodynamic and wind tunnel testing, with an emphasis on underwater speed and maneuverability.

The hull of the USS Albacore submarine utilized HY-80 high-strength steel with a yield strength of 80,000 psi. HY-80 remained the standard submarine steel through the Los Angeles submarine class.

Albacore submarine's keel was laid down on 15 March 1952 by the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard of Kittery, Maine. She was launched on 1 August 1953.

USS Albacore was decommissioned on 9 December 1972. Today, the USS Albacore submarine is open to the public. She is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a National Historic Landmark. In 2005, the United States Submarine Veterans of World War II inducted the USS Albacore into the Submarine Hall of Fame.
