ROYAL CAROLINE model
Royal Caroline was a royal yacht built
for the use of king George II and his wife, queen Caroline.
She was sailed for pleasure by
the royal family, and as a transport for members of
court sailing between England and Holland.
Royal Caroline
was always escorted by as many as four frigates.
When the King was aboard, the First Lord of the
Admiralty must be onboard.
At the time of her launched
in 1750,
the Royal Caroline was
the most sumptuously decorated vessels of all time.
She
not only was the most splendid ship ever built by
England but also represented an important stage in the
refinement of British shipbuilding. The Admiralty used
her as the prototype for a long series of frigates of
various classes between 1750 and 1800.
Royal Caroline
continued to be used for
official occasions during the French Revolutionary and
Napoleonic Wars, with King George III making frequent
trips in his yachts to welcome returning fleets and to
conduct fleet reviews.
Royal Caroline was
succeeded as the principal royal yacht by the slightly
larger HMY Royal Sovereign in 1804. She was finally
broken up in July 1820.
