EPPLETON HALL
Tugboat
Eppleton Hall is a
paddlewheel tugboat built in England in 1914. She was
designed to tow seagoing colliers from sea to wharf side
and back. She was also used to tow newly built ships out
to the North Sea.
Eppleton Hall belongs to a
once-numerous type of steam powered paddle tug that
began with the 1814 "Tyne Steam Boat", later
named Perseverance. Eppleton Hall was equipped with
twin surface condensing side-lever engines of
the "grasshopper" or "half-lever" type. Her speed was 10
knots, and her engines could function independently of
each other to aid maneuverability, enabling her to turn
inside her own length.
Eppleton Hall is the
only remaining intact example of a Tyne-built paddle
tug, and one of only two surviving British-built paddle
tugs. She is preserved at the San Francisco Maritime
National Historical Park in San Francisco, California.
Despite not
being eligible for grants reserved for US built vessels, Eppleton
Hall is in a superior condition. She is moored to Hyde
Street Pier and visible to the public.
In the Television South
and Clearwater Features TV show TUGS, Star Tug #3 O.J.
is based on Eppleton Hall. The boat Lakesider III on
TUGS' sister show Thomas and Friends was also based on
Eppleton Hall as it was the same model.
